ITALY'S BEST BARGAINS

What you can buy for €150.000 (£125,000 and under)

There could not be a better time to buy in Italy, says Linda Travella of Casa Travella, and she should know as she has been selling Italian Real Estate for 25 years!

There is a vast difference in what you can buy for your money now and what you could buy in 2008 and not enough people are taking advantage of it.

Tuscany, notorious for being expensive is very affordable now for all budgets. The same applies to Lake Como and Western Liguria. After research from various sources, Linda confirms that these are the most popular areas. The great advantage of these 3 areas is, of course, their accessibility.

There are flights to and from Nice and Milan from all parts of the UK and these 2 airports have great international access, which makes them an ideal base to buy that 2nd home in Italy you have always thought about, but decided you could not afford. With remote working it is so much easier to spend more time away from the office but still ‘working’ and that also means you could consider a total change of lifestyle.

Flights to and from Pisa are available from many UK airports and some international destinations. There is a great low cost bus service from Pisa airport to Florence.

You may be wondering what you can buy for the price and does it consist only of a ‘rustico’ a property that needs total restoration. You will be surprised at the type of Italian property you can buy for the money. Let us give you a few examples.

In Western Liguria, just 10kms from the sea and Imperia, you can buy a newly restored traditional stone built apartment in a house where there are 3. The property has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a terrace of over 20 square metres, and the price is only €135.000 (£113,000). Being just an hour and a quarter from Nice airport it would make a perfect second home. View Property

In Northern Tuscany this must be the bargain of the first quarter. It consists of 3 separate buildings. The main one of about 180 square metres in size is structurally sound but needs internal restoration. It could make 3 apartments or a large family house. The 2nd building is 100 square metres with the 3rd small building being suitable for a studio. The property sits in two and a half acres of land and has been reduced from €240.000 to €140.000!! A real steal! View Property

To find an Italian property for sale on Lake Como at €100.000 is not so common especially when it is in one of the best and most sought after areas, Tremezzo. This one bedroom apartment is on the 1st floor of a period building. It is a 5 minute walk to the lake and all amenities including the boat, Hydrofoil and bus services to Como, banks, restaurants, shops etc. View Property

2013 started well says Linda, with more interest than I expected in property overall. The fact that there is interest in the lower end of the market is encouraging as these were the first Italian properties to stop selling in the economic downturn.
